In a 2010 interview, Belzer reflected on his experience working on the sketch comedy series, saying, "This was like giving the kids the key to the store - to have all of these 'anti-establishment' people have a TV show on a network."

Belzer played Detective John Munch for the first time in the series "Homicide: Life on the Street" in 1993. He starred in the show for its entire run of seven seasons and 122 episodes. After the show ended in 1999, he continued playing the character in several episodes of "Law & Order" and joined "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" when it premiered in the same year. Belzer led the crime drama, appearing in the show for 326 episodes. He made his final appearance on "SVU" in 2016.
